Look for the Strength within the Weakness

Have you ever been let down by someone you lead or manage? If this happens more than once, you may start thinking of it as a flaw within the individual—which may lead to you eventually having a hard time seeing any of that person’s positive traits.

This interesting video points out how every weakness has a flipside—a strength. And vice versa.

When you understand not only the strengths but also the weaknesses of your direct reports, you can better tailor their work to help them achieve their goals. For example, someone who is extremely creative and bright may lack organization. When providing this person with a project, give them a short outline to help them stay on track or set up regular check-ins to ensure they are making progress.

Next time you feel let down as a leader, learn to find the strength within the weakness. Practicing this skill will demonstrate your appreciation for each person’s value and make you a better leader.

  1. This thinking is akin to “participation awards” in school sports. It is a dangerous and short sighted view. While everyone has strengths, if they’re not able to do the job, management would be derelict of their duty to not protect the company and the rest of the employees by making the necessary changes.

    • Maybe consider how it applies to self rather than to others. A reflective exercise to become more aware and stronger.
