  1. Thanks for the presentation today.
    I started running during work about 4 years ago. I discovered that rather than having a set time to run, as long as I didn’t have another appointment, I would run when I couldn’t solve a problem or had a big decision to make. Perhaps its the release of endorphins or dopamine, but I always find that when I get done running, I’ve got a solution to my problem.

    • Larry, that is so right! The moment of insight often happens when we veer away from directly thinking about it, mainly because other parts of the brain are activated.

    • Yes, I have studied this topic. I strongly recommend the works of Dr. David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D.. Dr. Hawkins is a psychiatrist, physician, researcher, and pioneer in the fields of consciousness research and spirituality.

          I highly recommend a recently published book by Dr. Julian Ford and Jon Wortmann, Highjacked by Your Brain, How to Free Yourself When Stress Takes Over. They use similar research Madeleine referred to and gave a succinct solution to resetting the brain as well as how to create new neural nets.

  6. Wow, that is a whole area of study in iteself, not my area of expertise at all. Great thing to look at though.

  7. just a quick “correction”. the advise is not “dont go to bed angry” but “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.” There is still plenty of time to get rested and solve issues before bed.

    • How does this info translate to managing younger generation in the workplace and having sprints of work them some off time such as flex time or focusing on results vs actual time at work. Seems like the brain has opportunity to refuel with this type of approach to the workday.

  8. Here’s a question we didn’t get to in the webinar–any advice for people who like to read before bed but want to be cautious of the light issue?

    • this is fairly new research, but the data suggests that the light from our screens is sending the message that it is day time… if you have trouble falling asleep, you might try reading an old fashioned magazine or book instead of using a device. If it helps, you’ll know…it has helped me.

  9. should i be exercising often during a day (walking, jumping jacks…)
    or is my 2-4 times a week swimming in the morning good enough?

    • It is so great that you are swimming! I am not a “medical professional” but the research would suggest that moving more is better than moving less…taking the stairs, walking instead of of riding the people mover etc.

  10. Interested in what you said about ‘when we seek an adrenaline rush’ it does not have the same impact as the ‘away from’ response, not sure i followed why that was the case since the ‘away from’ response also leads to the release of adreanline. Does it actually have a positive impact?

  11. What have you found to be the best way to get this knowledge in front of executives and for them to pay attention and take action.

    • The $64,000 question isn’t it? Google SCARF and there is a great article from the NeuroLeadership Journal that is readable even for Execs with ADD. Send them a recording of the webinar?

    • There is also and excellent article by John Tierny and Baumeister from the NY Times Magazine that would come up in a google search about Decision Fatigue… readable and has most of the info on self control.

  12. another question: When we expect a positive result and instead receive ‘bad news’ it sounds like the negative impact is twice as bad. Not sure i fully followed whether it was that there was a greater elimination of dopamine or whether there was an increase in adrenaline and cortisol. Also, sounds like the goal becomes to lower expectations, not easy if you are a dreamer.
