Instructions for “Catch Someone Doing Things Right” Twitter Contest

At the conclusion of the webinar Mark Paskowitz will also be announcing a special Twitter contest that The Ken Blanchard Companies is holding this week.  Starting on Tuesday and lasting for 72-hours, The Ken Blanchard Companies will give you a chance to “catch someone doing things right” by entering that person in a drawing for a copy of one of Ken Blanchard’s latest books. The book will contain a personalized inscription congratulating the winner on being caught doing things right.  The contest ends on Friday at 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time and you can enter as many people as you would like.  Here’s how to participate:

1. Go to www.twitter.com  and post the name of the person you would like to catch doing things right along with a very short description of why. Include the following code in your message @leaderchat

For example: @leaderchat  Nick Peterson—for doing an outstanding job all year and helping to make this our best year ever!

2. Push the UPDATE button

It’s as simple as that.  Every day between now and Friday we’ll randomly choose one lucky person among those entered to receive one of the personalized books.  Each day’s winner will be posted at 6:00 a.m. Pacific Time at www.leaderchat.org

Don’t miss this chance to say “thank you” to someone who really deserves it.  Participating is a fun, low-cost, and very thoughtful way to let someone know that you appreciate them!

PS: If you don’t have a Twitter account yet, you can sign up at Twitter when you get there.  Just follow the instructions and you’ll be online in minutes.

  1. You commented that you were not in favor of an employee of the month for large organizations, but what about on a smaller, departmental or divisional scale, where there may be less than 50 staff? I understand that a monthly process does remove the timeliness of the recognition, but I believe there is still merit to this approach. What do you think?

    • Dear Melissa
Yes, the impact of Volunteer work is super important for acknowleding individual efforts. Even though most people volunteer because they are “cause motivated” we don’t want to take their efforts for granted.

  2. If you wanted to get started with “catching someone doing things right” just open a second window and go to Twitter. Remember to add @leaderchat to your Twitter post so we can see it and enter your person into the drawing for one of the personalized Ken Blanchard books.

  3. In our organization, supervisors frequently give praise to employees by email, including “cc’s to other staff after we learn about a particular accomplishment or positive comment about the employee. How do you feel about this practice?

    • In general, I think this is a good practice because rarely do people know what everyone is doing that is great. I would think about the individual and what’s important to them from an employee perspective..

  4. What is best practice for recognizing teams?? Many times the results created are due to the efforts of many team members and not just the leader. In our company, consensus-based decision making is the foundation of our culture.

    • Great Question Randy. As organizations are largely moving and reward intact teams I think you can find ways to acknowledge both the individual contributions as well as the teams overall objectives. Going back to your values is great because you want to honor organizational citizenship.. At Blanchard we do reward High Performance Teams as well

  5. I also wanted to give everyone an update on the low-cost reward and recognition ideas that came in–over 200 new ideas! I’ll put them together into one document and send a copy to everyone who was on today’s call.

  6. You mentioned that there should be a time limit to each rewards program earlier. Is it best to focus on one behavior at a time to reward on? I have a fear that I’m going to lose that high performance once we switch to rewarding on something different.

    • Greetings Darren
It’s hard for me to comment without knowing more about what’s going on. For example, sales might have a focus around increased revenue and accounting might be focused around accounts receivable. I would trust your gut if switching criteria too quickly would impact high performers. If it’s working, stay the course. These are just some guidelines..

  7. If you wanted to get started with the Twitter contest, follow the instructions we’ve posted at http://www.leaderchat.org It’s a great way to recognize someone. Be sure to include @leaderchat in the post so we can enter you into the drawing for one of the Ken Blanchard books we are giving away.

  8. We’re just about out of time for today’s online chat. Thanks to everyone who participated here and on our webinar today. You’ll be receiving a copy of the slides Mark used in his presentation along with a link to the recording directly from our partners at WebEx. Separately I’ll send you the list of low-cost reward and recognition ideas that we all put together within the next couple of days.
